WESTPORT–Coming off a run to the FCIAC title match, only to be defeated by perennial powerhouse Greenwich, it is not surprising that the Staples boys tennis team is eying a return to the pinnacle match with hopes of winning it all this spring. The 2024 Class LL State Tournament runners-up are also seeking to get back to the state final for the first time in a couple of years.

There is plenty of talent in the lineup, but the Wreckers need several players to step up and help carry the team back to championship contention.

“Goals are to return back to the FCIAC Championship and avenge our final loss from last season. Also to contend for a Class LL State Championship. With seven new players, the most in the past 16 years, building an identity and establishing good habits will by keys to how far this team goes this season,” Coach Kris Hrisovulos said.

Captains are Aleko Vergakis and Robert Jacob, seniors who will fill two of the top three singles positions.

Junior Kieran Anand will play in one of the top four singles positions and doubles 1. Junior Jonny Greenspan will be playing in the doubles lineup. Sophomore Sebastian Elizondo will be mixing in between the top three singles positions and doubles 1. Newcomers/ sophomores Reid O’Brien and Andrew Ridloff should make an impact in the starting lineup as well, the coach anticipates.

Notable matches include the season-opener Monday, April 6 against New Canaan (preseason favorite in FCIAC) at 4 p.m. and April 16 at home versus Greenwich (undefeated the past three seasons) also at 4 p.m.

Wreckers will turn to several new players but have confidence they can compete with the best in the conference
