NORWALK – Excitement was running high before and during the Staples girls basketball game against Norwalk last night. As the last regular-season game of an up-and-down season, a win by Staples and a loss by Wilton would give Staples a coveted berth in the FCIAC championship tournament. And Staples was playing away on senior night, with an energized crowd cheering on the hometown Bears.

Behind the work of senior captain Sydelle Bernstein’s 17 points, Staples did what it had to do and beat Norwalk, 38-32. But Wilton beat Greenwich and grabbed the final seed in the FCIAC tournament.

The game began up-tempo as both teams felt each other out and tried to penetrate the other’s defense. This led to several turnovers on both ends of the court. Bernstein set the tone for the game with an early three to end the first quarter 7-7.

Following the first quarter break, senior captain Mia Didio had success penetrating the paint. The Bears’ stealthy offense kept pace and dissected Staples defense, leading to several backdoor layups. At half, Staples had a one-point edge over Norwalk.

Staples offense began to click in earnest in the third quarter. Senior captain Jen Westphal scored two quick baskets and Bernstein continued her torrid shooting from the three-point line. The Wreckers led by five at the end of the third, 29-24.

Staples expanded their lead to eight points with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. Although the Bears closed the lead to as little as two points, junior Scarlett Siegal kept the Bears in check with a timely basket and blocked shot.

Final: Staples 38, Norwalk 32.

Although the Wreckers will not participate in the FCIAC tournament, they will compete in the state CIAC tournament, beginning on Feb. 25.
