WESTPORT–The Building Department last week issued a permit to demolish the structures at 18 Maple Avenue N. The Historic District Commission had voted in favor of issuing the demolition permit at its February 8 meeting.
The 2-story Colonial was built in 1960. It has 2,100-square-feet of living space, a basement, a crawl space, a stone patio, an open porch, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a finished upper story and a garage.
The property traded hands last week for $800,000. It had previously traded for $284,000 in 1986. The property’s current assessment is $459,700.

Another “affordable” house in Westport will meet the wrecking ball. The “affordable” house immediately adjacent to this one is also headed for the landfill. Both houses are in decent shape and are located just around the corner from Old Road – a street which has seen many of its smaller homes replaced by cookie cutter spec homes. The property listed above, along with its neighbor, both have SIR Development signs in front of them. SIR will make large profits building their formulaic replacements. The Town of Westport will love the conveyance fees and the increase in property tax revenue the bigger, replacement houses will generate. Yet, at the same time, the Town will wring its hands over the lack of affordable housing stock in Westport as two more sweet, smaller, vintage homes get crushed into dumpsters.
Wendy thank you for speaking out about this.
So many people feel the same. But this town hasn’t given a damn about it., just more concerned about money generated by Mc mansions while turning it into an exclusive country club town in the name of beautifying the town. Mean while the whole down town areas and beaches look like very little patchwork attempts at beautifying.
Bridgeport downtown and Stamford areas were fixed up nicely, then you come to Westport Gold Coast. Very sad rich people don’t complain about
Why Westport hasn’t looked better.
But big projects this summer. But again only patch work. Ps only Westport wouldn’t fence in ugly compactors in Parker Harding lot. What a sight to see in the Gold Coast.
Westport really imitates New York City.
Meanwhile those that grew up have to travel hour plus as like any one working in town .
Just like New York City.
To bad for Westport in name of progress we gave up being a nice Suburb small but nice town.
