WESTPORT–Lisa Wexler earned the Democratic Party endorsement to run for another four-year term as the Probate Judge for the Westport/Weston District. She ran unopposed. This will be the second time Wexler is running as a Democrat, having been elected previously as both a Democrat and as a Republican.
Westporter Andrew Nevas nominated Judge Wexler. In his remarks, he said:
“I have been practicing law for many years, and have appeared before hundreds of judges. I have also appeared before Judge Wexler hundreds of times in connection with a variety of different matters. I feel confident in saying that I have never appeared before a judge with as much compassion and empathy as Judge Wexler… She always hones in on the issues that are most important to the people involved. For while many judges view cases as purely legal matters, Judge Wexler knows that for the people involved, it can be a daunting, intimidating and frightening experience. She never forgets that the individuals before her are people with hopes, dreams and fears, not just parties to a legal case. She understands the importance of letting people who appear before her have a voice and be heard.”
The chair of the Weston Democratic Party, Mary Francois, seconded the nomination. In her remarks, she stated:
“[Judge Wexler’s] position relies not only on her legal expertise, but also on her ability to run the court itself. This is where I first learned Lisa Wexler’s name. Lisa has made a habit of offering opportunity to local community members, often parents who have immense talents, but have taken time away from work to raise children. It is uncommon that an employer recognizes this untapped talent pool and I think it’s pretty awesome. Judge Wexler runs a court that reflects who she is. She emphasizes attention to detail and compassionate connection to the community. Perhaps most key is that her office is dog friendly!”
The vote was unanimous and reached by acclamation. The probate convention was chaired by Weston DTC treasurer Cheri McKenzie.
In accepting the nomination, Judge Wexler said “I love doing this work and I thank you for allowing me the privilege to keep doing it. Most people are not happy to find themselves in probate court. We remember that every day and do our best to be compassionate and kind. I hope that I can continue to serve you with distinction for the next four years.”
Wexler, a Westport resident, was first elected in 2013 in a special election to serve a one-year term. She was then re-elected in 2014, 2018 and 2022. Judge Wexler is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University and the New York University School of Law. She has lived in Westport with her husband Bill and her family since 1989.
