WESTPORT–The No. 2 Staples baseball team was upset by No. 7 visitor New Canaan 16-5 in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday.

The Wreckers will have to wait for state tournament play, which begins on June 1 (opponent TBD).

The Wreckers erased a 3-0 deficit with a four-run third inning and added to its lead with a run in the fourth.

Vincent Vega drove in two runs, Jules Cicero doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, and Bruce Schlegelmilch had two hits, including a double, and run scored. Nolan Walters had two hits and an RBI. Cole Landgraf collected two hits and a run scored.

The Rams tied the score with a pair of runs in the fifth, then took control with a seven-spot in the sixth before adding four runs in the seventh.

Upsets are in the air. No. 8 Darien doubled up top seed Fairfield Warde 4-2 putting the last two tourney qualifiers in the semifinals.

New Canaan will face No. 3 Trumbull and Darien will take on No 4 Ludlowe in Tuesday’s semis.
