Editor’s note: following is an opinion submitted by Danielle Chesebrough, Chair, CT Forward and First Selectman, Stonington.

After six years serving as a First Selectman here in Connecticut, I’ve learned that the most important quality in leadership isn’t political experience — it’s trust. When a leader is focused on building trust, they listen before acting, make decisions openly, and always remember that public office exists to serve the people, not the other way around.

That’s why I’m proud to support David Rosenwaks for First Selectman of Westport.

David represents the kind of thoughtful, community-driven leadership that towns across Connecticut need right now. Since moving to Westport with his family, he has immersed himself in local life —from serving as a volunteer soccer coach to an elected member of the RTM, where he serves on multiple committees including Education, Public Protection, Library, Museum & Arts, and IT/Communications. He also launched the RTM Community Conversation series to bring residents and representatives together for open, civil dialogue — something every community could use more of.

David’s decision to run as Westport’s first-ever Independent Party–endorsed candidate is another reflection of his integrity. It’s not the easiest path, but it’s the honest one — allowing him to stay focused on what matters most: the people of Westport. His campaign is rooted in transparency, collaboration, fiscal responsibility and practical ideas.

I’m also proud that the Forward Party has endorsed David’s candidacy. Forward is committed to putting people over politics. We back candidates who are willing to build consensus, work with others, and lead with respect for every voice. David embodies these values, and his independent leadership offers Westport a real alternative to the divisiveness that too often defines politics today.

As someone who understands firsthand the challenges and responsibilities of this role, I see in David the judgment, empathy, and balance it takes to lead well. He’s not running for a title — he’s stepping forward to unite and serve. That’s why I’m proud to stand with Forward in endorsing David Rosenwaks — and why I hope Westport will seize this opportunity to make history this November.
