WESTPORT — A civic-minded group of community advocates, focused on “fostering smart growth and creative planning to preserve our town’s attributes,” is looking for allies to help “ensure a bright future for all who call Westport home.”

The Coalition for Westport, a decade-old advocacy group and political party, on Wednesday issued a call for others to support its mission, particularly since this is a municipal election year.

Among the issues that Ken Bernhard and Larry Weisman, coalition leaders, said will be a priority for the group’s attention in coming months are:

  • Affordable housing.
  • Possible relocation of Police Department headquarters, and its potential consolidation with fire and EMS forces in a new public safety complex.
  • Status of rehabilitation or replacement plans for the William F. Cribari Memorial Bridge.
  • Any prospective use of the Baron’s South open space property.
  • Future of Westport Community Gardens.
  • Pending review of the Hamlet at Saugatuck project.
  • Development of the Hiawatha Lane affordable housing project.
  • Downtown parking and traffic.

Interested individuals are invited to review the coalition’s positions on a range of issues posted on its website. People who may wish to get involved, share their opinions or ask questions can do so via the website or by emailing WestportCoalition@gmail.com.
