WESTPORT — A local man is accused of stealing credit cards from a resident’s unlocked car last summer and then using the cards to make illegal transactions at Westport businesses.
Jonathan Doherty, 28, was charged with credit card theft, third-degree identity theft, illegal use of a credit card and fourth-degree larceny.
Police said the theft was reported last Aug. 19 when a Westport woman filed a complaint stating that her purse was stolen from her unlocked car sometime overnight.
The purse was later located, according to the report, but several credit cards were missing — two of which had already been used illegally.
After checking with the local businesses where use of the stolen credit cards was reported, investigators obtained surveillance video of the person making the fraudulent transactions, police said.
With additional information obtained about the car the suspect was driving, Doherty was identified by police as the suspect in the case.
A warrant was issued for Doherty’s arrest, and he was taken into custody last Wednesday.
He was held on $50,000 bond, and the next day was taken for arraignment at state Superior Court in Stamford.
