WESTPORT — The drivers of a tractor-trailer truck and sedan died from injuries suffered in a three-vehicle pile-up on Interstate 95 in Fairfield at midnight Friday, re-routing morning rush-hour traffic through Westport and delaying morning school bus runs.
The highway was closed in both directions, between I-95’s exits 19 and 23, at one point during emergency operations.
William Foster, 75, of Bridgeport, the driver of a Chevrolet Impala, and truck driver Fred Nimmon, 70, of Aspers, Pa., both were ejected from their vehicles from the impact of the chain-reaction collision, according to the State Police report.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the third vehicle, a Virginia woman driving a BMW, was transported to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment of what were described as “minor injuries.”
The crash took place about midnight Friday on northbound I-95, just south of Exit 22 in Fairfield.
State Police said Foster, traveling in the highway’s center lane, apparently lost control of his car “for an unknown reason” and struck the median concrete barrier. The car was left disabled in the center lane, where the BMW then collided with it. Foster was ejected from his car onto the roadway, according to the report.
The tractor-trailer also then hit Foster’s car, causing the truck to smash into the median barrier, ejecting Nimmon from the cab, State Police said.
I-95 traffic was detoured around the accident scene for several hours early Friday.
In Westport, police and school officials warned that traffic routed off I-95 would make the usually busy morning rush even more congested — particularly on the Post Road corridor through town.
Friday morning school bus runs were expected to suffer delays, according to a statement emailed by Assistant Supt. of Schools John Bayers.
Westport police also posted an advisory on their Facebook page to expect heavy traffic on local streets as a result of the I-95 crash.
