WESTPORT — The search resumed Monday morning for two boaters from New York who remain missing, after three others were rescued from choppy waters Sunday, when their small boat sank off Cockenoe Island.

The search, led by the Westport police marine unit, resumed at sunrise Monday after being suspended at 9 p.m. Sunday, according to police Lt. Eric Woods.

The small fishing boat, with five people aboard, was anchored off the south side of Cockenoe Island when it sank sometime after 9:30 a.m. Sunday, but police were not alerted to the incident until about 4 p.m. Sunday, according to reports.

A boater notified police about 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon that a man was found clinging to a navigational buoy near the island, while another man and woman were pulled from the water nearby, Woods said.

The identities of the men missing as of Monday morning — one from Spring Valley, N.Y., and the other from Suffern, N.Y. — have not been verified.

The three people rescued Sunday were transported to a marina in Norwalk, and then to the hospital for treatment.

All three were released from the hospital Sunday night after evaluation.

Police, who said their investigation has been hampered by “a significant language barrier,” have been working with translators to assist their investigation.

As the search for the men continues Monday, Westport police are being assisted by Coast Guard marine and air units, as well the Suffolk County Air Unit. On Sunday, Norwalk and Fairfield police marine units also joined the search.

Police ask that boaters who were in the Cockenoe Island area between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday contact them at 203-341-6000.
