WESTPORT — A rental truck was no match Sunday night for the Metro-North Railroad overpass on Saugatuck on Sunday night.

The Ryder truck, headed south on the state road, struck the span and got wedged beneath it, some of its top peeled back like a sardine can.

The railroad span has a clearance of 10 feet, 11 inches. The truck was clearly taller.

Andrew Colabella, a Representative Town Meeting member from District 4, said he saw some Metropolitan Transit Authority vehicles rushing somewhere about 10:20 p.m., then got a call from a friend about the crash.

Westport police said about midnight that the incident had been cleared and both lanes of Saugatuck Avenue had been opened again.
