WESTPORT — Greens Farms Railroad Station’s parking lot No. 1 will be closed Friday night, and officials warn that any vehicles left there after 7 p.m. will be towed — at the owner’s expense.
The lot is being closed to clear the way for the town’s collection of household hazardous materials on Saturday.
The program for safe disposal of potentially dangerous products and chemicals will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the rail depot’s parking lot off New Creek Road.
The parking lot will remain off limits until 5 p.m. Saturday, according to the announcement from police and public works officials.

If you need to take the train from Greens Farms this Friday and think you may not get back by 7 PM, just take Wheels2U to the Greens Farms station. Wheels2U will pick you up at your door any time between 5:45 AM and 10 AM and take you right to the platform at the Greens Farms station. It will take you back to your door again any time between 4 PM and 9:30 PM. Just download the app and call for a ride about 20 minutes before you would normally leave for the station. For more information on Wheels2U including how to download the app, just go to http://www.wheels2uwestport.com.
While I completely appreciate the collection efforts, I don’t quite understand why it is a good idea to set this up in a commuter lot (including all of the daily spaces) and require cars to be removed by 7:00 pm on a weekday, given that commuters routinely return after that time. (Why do cars need to be gone fourteen hours before this starts?)
Are we allowing people to park in the permit spaces today and only giving daily fees tickets (rather than parking violations) if they aren’t permit holders?
