A list of unwanted materials that can be dropped off, according to officials’ announcement, includes: gasoline, kerosene, spray paint, paint strippers, paint thinners, solvents, paints, stains, turpentine, varnishes and wood preservatives.

Items such as the following will not be accepted: ammunition, flares and commercial hazardous waste.

- Keep products in original labeled containers.
- Place leaking containers in clear plastic bags.
- Tighten container lids and pack items in sturdy cardboard boxes lined with paper.
- Transport boxes in the vehicle’s trunk or rear area away from passengers.
- Pets and children should not be brought to the waste collection site.
- Keep vehicle windows open and remain in the vehicle while materials are unloaded.
Westport residents are reminded they can drop off certain materials for recycling throughout the year at the town’s Transfer Station at 300 Sherwood Island Connector. These items include: antifreeze, motor oil, batteries of any type, light bulbs and electronics. Hours are 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and 7 a.m.-noon Saturdays.
