WESTPORT — A porch fire at a Riverside Avenue house Sunday afternoon was extinguished by firefighters before spreading and causing serious damage.

The structure fire was reported shortly before 3:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a report by Assistant Fire Chief Philip Hessberger. Four fire engines, a truck company and the shift command car were dispatched to the scene.

Smoke and flames were visible at the front of the home at 408 Riverside Ave. when the first fire units arrived at the scene, but firefighters were able to isolate the blaze to a three-season porch before the blaze extended to the rest of the building.

A resident of the house suffered burned hands while trying to douse the flames before firefighters arrived, and was transported to a hospital for care, according to the report.

No other injuries were reported.

The house was ventilated to remove smoke and carbon monoxide before fire crews cleared the scene shortly after 5 p.m.

Police and EMS personnel also were on scene to provide assistance.

Cause of the fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
