WESTPORT — A 64-year-old woman driving for Uber Eats was seriously injured Saturday night when she tried to prevent three teenagers from stealing her car as she picked up a takeout pizza order.

The incident, which took place about 7 p.m. Saturday outside Golden Pizza, 1759 Post Road East, triggered a police chase of the suspects that ended with a crash in Bridgeport and the apprehension of an 18-year-old and two juveniles, police said.

The delivery driver was inside the pizzeria picking up an order-to-go when she noticed someone enter her unlocked white Hyundai, and went outside to try to prevent the theft.

When woman tried to intervene, she suffered a “serious head injury,” police said, and had to be taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment.

A gofundme page has been set up to benefit the assault victim, with all proceeds pledged to help her recovery. by midday Monday, the crowd-funding site had raised more than $25,000.

The thief, meanwhile, fled the Westfair shopping center in the woman’s Hyundai accompanied by a black Acura.

Both vehicles sped westward down Post Road East, but were spotted traveling together by a Westport patrol officer stationed on the Sherwood Island Connector.

Neither vehicle stopped when the officer attempted to pull them over, and instead headed onto Interstate 95 eastbound.

Because of the incident’s “severity,” police said, the officer pursued the cars driven by the suspects onto the highway.

During the chase, the officer lost sight of the stolen Hyundai, but continued to pursue the Acura, which left I-95 at Exit 29 in Bridgeport, where the Acura driver lost control and crashed into an occupied vehicle and several parked cars, according to the report.

The Westport officer was able to apprehend one suspect trying to flee from the wrecked Acura, while two others who fled were arrested a short time later by Bridgeport police.

The Acura had been reported stolen in Hamden earlier Saturday, police said, and a gun was later found in the car. Investigators said, however, they do not believe the gun was used during the Westport incident.

The stolen Hyundai had not been located as of Sunday morning, police said, but the search for the car and the person who stole it remains “active.”

The 18-year-old, identified as Giovanni Abreu, of New Haven, and two juveniles taken into custody after the Bridgeport crash face a litany of charges in connection with the incident.

All three were charged with: first-degree robbery, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery, first-degree assault on an elderly person, first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, third-degree larceny, criminal possession of a firearm, illegal transfer of a firearm, theft of a firearm, engaging in police pursuit and reckless driving.

Abreu was held on a $100,000 bond, and the juveniles were to be transferred to a juvenile detention facility.

In a statement issued after the incident, Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas credited the “swift actions and teamwork” of officers for quickly arresting three of the four suspects.

Koskinas also thanked Bridgeport, Fairfield and State police for their assistance.
