WESTPORT — A California man has been implicated in a scheme to fraudulently withdraw money from a resident’s bank account.
Jordan Smith, 36, of Tracy, Calif., was charged May 9 with first-degree identity theft and first-degree forgery.
Police in April 2023 launched an investigation into a complaint that someone apparently made unauthorized attempts to withdraw money from his account.
The complainant was told by his bank that a suspect — later identified as Smith — deposited fraudulent checks in the account and then tried to withdraw the money, according to the report.
Police investigators used search warrants, video-surveillance recordings and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies to identify Smith as the perpetrator, police said.
A warrant for Smith’s arrest was issued, and he was served May 9 while at state Superior Court in Stamford. He was formally charged and held on $100,000 bond in connection with the Westport charges.
