WESTPORT — A New York man, sought by police for his role in a residential burglary where about $70,000 in jewelry and other possessions were stolen nearly three years ago, was arrested earlier this week.
Aldo Athanasopoulos, 29, of Queens, N.Y., was charged Monday with third-degree burglary, first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny.
The burglary took place at a Broadview Road home about 10 p.m. April 11, 2020, when intruders forced their way into the rear of the dwelling, ransacked several rooms and fled with jewelry and other possessions valued at approximately $70,000, police said.
The lengthy investigation, according to police, was based on search warrants, license plate readers and information shared with other law-enforcement agencies.
As a result, arrest warrants were issued for Athanasopoulos and Franco Saldrigas-Garcia, who was arrested shortly after the burglary on April 17, 2020.
Athanasopoulos, however, was able to elude arrest on these charges until he recently was apprehended in New York. He was turned over to the custody of Westport police detectives Monday at the Nassau County Jail in New York.
Athanasopoulos was brought to Police Department headquarters, where he was formally charged and is being held on bond set at $400,000, according to court records.
He also was charged with first-degree failure to appear on a re-arrest warrant, with additional bond set at $35,000, police said.
