WESTPORT — Laptops, credit cards and other possessions were stolen from cars parked Tuesday at the Westport-Weston Family YMCA, according to an alert from the Y.
The thefts occurred when thieves in a van drove through the Y’s parking lot, off Allen Raymond Lane, smashing windows and swiping property left in vehicles before fleeing.
The thieves apparently were wearing dark clothing and masks, according to a police spokesman, who added investigators plan to review surveillance video of the incident for evidence.
“Please be assured that your safety and security remain a top priority. We will continue to ensure the parking lot is well lit and under 24-hour surveillance,” Brian Marazzi, the Y’s membership director, said in a statement at midday Wednesday.
The statement also offered advice on ways to help minimize the threat of future thefts from vehicles:
- Do not leave keys/fob in the vehicle.
- Keep possessions — such as phones, laptops and other electronic devices, money, briefcases and shopping bags — out of sight.
- Make sure doors are locked and all windows and sunroofs are closed and secure.
