WESTPORT — A New York man was apprehended fleeing the scene of a home burglary last week, police said.
Jaime Mogollon-Ayala, 42, of Flushing, N.Y., was spotted by the home’s surveillance cameras burglarizing the premises Dec. 2, according to the report, and was taken into custody a short time later.
He was charged with conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license, insufficient insurance, misuse of license plates and a registration violation.
The incident unfolded about 7:25 p.m. Dec. 2 when a homeowner alerted police that a burglary was in-progress at the residence, and several suspects could be seen by surveillance cameras running from the home’s back door, police said.
Officers dispatched to the scene checked the home to ensure no intruders remained behind and set up a perimeter around the area.
An officer patrolling the perimeter spotted a car, its headlights turned off, moving slowly through the area.
The car, driven by Jaime Mogollon-Ayala, was stopped and the officer saw “evidence in plain view” in the vehicle that “indicated that he was allegedly involved in the burglary,” according to the report.
Mogollon-Ayala was wearing clothes and had physical characteristics similar to a figure recorded by the home’s surveillance system, police said.
Mogollon-Ayala was arrested at the scene and formally charged at Police Department headquarters.
No other suspects were identified that night, although the case remains under investigation by police detectives.
Mogollon-Ayala was released after posting $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges Dec. 12 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
