WESTPORT — Charges have been filed against two men involved in a road rage incident, where one man allegedly slashed at another using a boxcutter, near a busy Post Road East intersection this week, police said.

Christopher O’Connor, 58, of Newtown, was booked on charges of criminal attempt at first-degree assault on an elderly person, second-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace.

The other man, Thomas Howes, 62, of Westport, faces charges of second-degree breach of peace and following too close with the intent to harass.

The confrontation began about 1:20 p.m. Monday when Howes, who police said admitted instigating the incident, blew his vehicle’s horn at O’Connor near the Post Road East intersection with Roseville Road and then started tailing O’Connor, according to the report.

The men pulled into a Post Road East parking lot, where police said Howes approached O’Connor and shoved and yelled at him.

O’Connor reacted by pulling out a boxcutter and asked Howes if he wanted to fight, causing Howes to retreat to his vehicle, police said. O’Connor, however, pursued Howes and “slashed at his jacket with the boxcutter through an open window, causing his jacket and undershirt to rip,” according to the report.

Howes reportedly was not injured, and O’Connor left before officers arrived at the scene.

Police later contacted O’Connor, and he turned himself in at Police Department headquarters, where he was formally charged. He was released after posting $5,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 27 at state Superior Court in Stamford. Howes was released on a misdemeanor summons promise to appear the same day at Superior Court.
