WESTPORT — A 76-year-old town resident has been charged with possession of child pornography.
John Minehan, of Westport, was charged Nov. 28 with first-degree possession of child pornography after an investigation that began in August when police said they received a “cyber tip” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The tip, according to police, included pornographic images of children, the name of the person suspected of downloading those images and the suspect’s IP address.
After securing search warrants to investigate the NCMEC tip, local detectives “confirmed the name on the cyber tip as John Minehan of Westport,” according to the police report.
Police detectives executed a search warrant at Minehan’s residence on Oct. 21 and seized several items believed to show evidence of child pornography, police said.
Based on that evidence, an arrest warrant was issued, and on Nov. 28 Minehan turned himself in at Police Department headquarters.
His bond on the charge was set at $150,000.
A woman who answered the phone Wednesday morning at a number listed for Minehan said it “was the wrong number” and hung up. It could not be immediately determined if he has legal representation.
After posting bond, Minehan was released and is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 8 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
