WESTPORT — A New York man, identified by police as the fourth thief who stole more than $7,000 in merchandise from Ulta Beauty in December 2021, was taken into custody this week.

Rodelle Murray, 33, of Bronx, N.Y., was charged Jan. 30 with third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny and interfering with a police officer.

The charges were filed in connection with an incident at Ulta Beauty, 1365 Post Road East, on Dec. 2, 2021. Four men allegedly stole merchandise valued at more than $7,000, fled on foot to a gray Honda waiting nearby on Old Road and sped from the scene onto southbound Interstate 95, where the getaway vehicle crashed near Exit 17.

Witnesses reported that four people fled from the wreck into nearby woods. After a perimeter was set up by police around the crash scene, with the assistance of a State Police K-9 team, three suspects were taken into custody on Treadwell Avenue.

A fourth suspect — identified by police as Murray — eluded capture at the time.

Officers searching the abandoned vehicle found not only goods stolen from the store, according to the police report, but a driver’s license and vehicle registration in the name of Rodelle Murray.

Further investigation of cell phone records also linked Murray to the incident, police said.

A warrant for Murray’s arrest was issued, and on Jan. 30 he was extradited from a prison in upstate New York and brought to Westport to face formal charges.

Murray was held on $40,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 3 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
