WESTPORT — Four New Yorkers were detained on Long Lots Road after fleeing the Ulta Beauty store on Post Road East with shoplifted merchandise valued at more than $6,000 last week, according to police.
The suspects, all residents of Mount Vernon, N.Y., were identified as Candi Lue, 44; Kardell Lester, 24; Omar Palmer, 26, and Antonio Smith, 30.
Each was charged with third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny and illegal possession of a shoplifting device in connection with the April 20 incident.
Ulta Beauty has been the target of repeated shoplifting incidents — some of the thefts have been valued in the thousands of dollars — prompting store officials to begin affixing GPS tracking devices in an attempt to thwart future incidents. Another New York man was charged with larceny last month after he was linked to shoplifting at the store by a tracking device.
On April 20, police were called to the store at 1365 Post Road East when store employees reported that three people were acting “suspiciously” and carrying large bags, according to the report.
When officers entered the store, the three suspects left the store and jumped in a vehicle parked in the nearby Lexus dealership’s lot, police said. The vehicle headed west on Post Road East, passing vehicles stopped at a red traffic light and headed north on Turkey Hill Road.
Police were able to stop the vehicle on Long Lots Road, where the three suspects in the store — identified as Lue, Lester and Smith — as well as the driver — Palmer — all were taken into custody, according to the report.
After police searched Palmer’s vehicle, they allegedly found Ulta Beauty merchandise valued at about $6,300 and shoplifting equipment such as booster bags and window punches, according to the report.
Palmer also faces a series of motor vehicle offenses in connection with the incident, including operating a motor vehicle without a license.
Each of the suspects was released after posting $5,000 bond, and they are scheduled to be arraigned April 28 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
