WESTPORT — A Fairfield driver was intoxicated when he crashed into a stone wall on Beachside Avenue last June, police said.
Lorne Mitchell, 56, was charged Jan. 12 with driving under the influence, traveling unreasonably fast and failure to drive in the proper lane in connection with the incident.
Police were dispatched shortly after 5:30 p.m. June 2 to the Beachside Avenue scene of a single-vehicle accident, where a car left the roadway and struck a stone wall.
The driver — identified as Lorne Mitchell — was found sitting on the wall near the disabled vehicle, police said.
Officers detected the odor of alcohol on his breath, according to the report, and he was unsteady on his feet and unable to perform a field sobriety test to standard.
Mitchell was taken to a hospital for evaluation, but police later used search warrants to obtain records to determine he “was intoxicated at the time of the crash,” according to the report.
A warrant for Mitchell’s arrest was issued, and on Jan. 12 he turned himself in at Police Department headquarters. He was formally charged and released on $5,000 bond for arraignment Feb. 6 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
