WESTPORT — An elderly man reported missing early this morning in the Saugatuck Shores area was found by police partially submerged and pulled from the cold water before being rushed to a hospital.
The man, who was evaluated by Westport EMS personnel before being taken to the hospital, did not appear to have suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.
Reported missing about 5:55 a.m. Tuesday, the man was spotted in the water a short time later by officers dispatched to the area.
Using a neighbor’s canoe, several officers paddled out to the man and hoisted him from the cold water.
The officers were assisted by firefighters back on shore, where EMS checked the man’s vital signs.
His condition in the hospital was not available later in the morning, but officials said it did not appear to be serious.
Police Chief Foti Koskinas, in a statement released afterward, praised the officers who made the rescue.
“There is no doubt that these officers’ quick thinking and superior teamwork led to a positive outcome,” Koskinas said, and also gave credit for assistance provided by fire and EMS crews on scene.
