WESTPORT — Three juveniles are accused of firing gel projectiles at pedestrians around town Saturday, part of a viral TikTok challenge, police said.

The juveniles, who were not identified because of their ages, were charged with “multiple counts” of third-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree breach of peace. They were released into the custody of their parents.

Police said they received several emergency calls Saturday evening from pedestrians reporting they were struck by projectiles fired from a passing motor vehicle.

One person reported being struck in the eye, according to police.

After a detailed description of the three culprits’ vehicle was provided by callers to police, officers were able to track down and stop the vehicle in the area of Greens Farms Road and Compo Road South.

In the vehicle, officers said they found air soft guns “capable of firing gel-like projectiles at a high velocity.”

Police said the youths were targeting pedestrians with projectiles as part of the “Orbeez Challenge” posted on the social-media platform TikTok. In that challenge, gel balls or water pellets made by Orbeez are fired at random people, whose reactions are filmed and posted on TikTok.

Anyone struck by the projectiles Saturday should contact Westport police, whose investigation is continuing. Call 203-341-6000.
