WESTPORT — A 28-year-old man, who left his car after crashing Saturday night on a local stretch of the. Merritt Parkway, was killed when another car struck his vehicle.

Mateo Gaviria, of Bridgeport, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to State Police.

Gaviria apparently lost control of the Toyota Corolla he was driving near the parkway’s southbound Exit 42 about 10:30 p.m. Saturday, causing the car to crash into the concrete median and then “come to an uncontrolled final rest in the left lane,” according to the report.

Gaviria left his car, which then was hit from behind by an Infiniti headed south in the left lane, police said, and the collision’s impact caused one of the vehicles to strike Gaviria.

Troopers dispatched to the accident site began administering emergency first aid, but Gaviria was declared dead at the scene by a Westport EMS paramedic, according to State Police.

The two occupants of the Infiniti, both Trumbull residents, were transported to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment of what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Trooper Ryan Rodriguez at ryan.Rodriguez@ct.gov.
