WESTPORT — Unneeded or expired prescription drugs will be collected locally Saturday — no questions asked — in collaboration with “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day” organized by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The collection, conducted by the Police Department in partnership with the DEA, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave.
Drugs can be dropped off anonymously, according to event organizers. There is no fee.
Medications that will be accepted include tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should be sealed tightly in original containers.
Not eligible for the collection, however, are syringes, sharps and illegal drugs.
There also is a year-round drug collection bin in the lobby of Police Department headquarters, 50 Jesup Road. In addition, a supply of medication disposal bags is available, which can be used to discard pills and liquid medications with standard garbage, by following instructions.
The drug-collection program is organized by the DEA and local officials to help prevent overdoses and curb the nationwide opioid epidemic, often rooted in abuse of prescription medications, according to the agency’s announcement.
The program also is designed to prevent potentially dangerous or addictive medicine from falling into the wrong hands.
