WESTPORT — An 18-year-old Waterbury male, accused of stealing a BMW in Greenwich with two accomplices Sunday afternoon, was taken into custody near Kimberly Drive here after the car crashed on the Merritt Parkway and he fled the scene trying to avoid capture.
Two other suspects also fled on foot from the accident, which occurred about 1:30 p.m. Sunday near the parkway’s Clinton Avenue overpass. The crash in the highway’s northbound lanes shut down the road, police said.
Those suspects, however, eluded a wide-ranging search of the neighborhood by Westport, State and Norwalk police, assisted by drones and K-9 units.
The suspect taken into custody was identified by State Police as Waterbury resident Keon Webster, who was injured in the crash and taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment.
Webster faces a series of charges in connection with the incident, including larceny of a motor vehicle, interfering with a police officer, second-degree reckless endangerment, driving without a license and failure to drive in the proper lane.
He later was released into the custody of Westport police and held for arraignment Monday at state Superior Court, according to State Police.
Webster’s two accomplices, who avoided immediate capture, by Sunday evening were no longer believed to be in the area, police said.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity in the area is asked to immediately contact Westport police by calling the “911” emergency number or the department’s standard number 203-341-6000.
