WESTPORT — A person who escaped supervision from St. Vincent’s Behavioral Care Center is back in custody Tuesday afternoon, following a police warning earlier in the day for people to shelter in place while a manhunt was underway.
Police said the person was located about 3:35 p.m. Tuesday on Compo Road South and returned to the mental health center at 47 Long Lots Road, about an hour after leaving rhe facility.
The person, who police said was on probation, “has a history of behavioral health issues as well as domestic violence arrests,” according to the police statement.
To bolster their search, police deployed drones and a K-9 within a perimeter where the patient was believed to be.
The person also was fitted with an electronic-monitoring device, which helped police track him to Compo Road South where he was taken into custody by an off-duty officer.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
A spokeswoman for Hartford HealthCare, which owns St. Vincent’s Behavioral Care Center, in answer to a request for comment by the Westport Journal, said, “We can’t comment on anything that could compromise patient privacy.”
She did not respond to a follow-up question about security at the center and how the escape might affect neighbors.
In a separate statement, Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice said police contacted school officials about the manhunt as the town’s middle schools were being dismissed Tuesday.
As a result, he said, buses were held back and the schools’ safety officers “responded to ensure our schools remained safe.”
