To the editor:
On Feb. 7, the Westport Journal published a piece on the Westport DTC’s call for candidates.
In the fifth paragraph, journalist John Schwing states, ” . . . some potential candidates probably would not be required to fill out an application form.” The author names some of our town’s prominent Democratic leaders. As a party, we are ever grateful to those who contribute to Westport’s success. That said, Mr. Schwing’s suggestion any candidate is preordained or fast-tracked is false. Further, his suggestion has a chilling effect on our search for the best possible selectperson’s ticket.
The Westport Democratic Party, like its name, is committed to the democratic process. ALL prospective candidate(s) will be vetted by a nine-person Nominating Committee, after which all 70 members of our Town Committee will vote. We will also call for nominations from the floor. As always, this meeting will be open to the public, including the press.
The town of Westport is unique in the breadth of experience, expertise and talent within our population. As stated in our press release, the Democrats are seeking a candidate with “experience, drive, vision and compassion.” These assets (particularly experience) come in many forms. The DNC made a grave error in failing to hold a truncated primary. Democrats may have won the presidential election with a more robust and open process. Voices matter, democracy matters and open processes yield optimal outcomes.
I am ever grateful to the magnificent leaders noted in the Journal’s piece, and they should all be commended for their continued service, and perhaps they have interest in doing more. But leadership comes in many forms. Our town has general residents who double as world-class leaders at home, in the office, on the stage, on boards and elsewhere.
I encourage everyone with interest to come forward and consider leading our world-class town. Please reach out to Michael Gordon per our press release, and feel free to contact me directly with any questions.
Michelle Mechanic, chair, Westport Democratic Town Committee

Thanks for clarifying this!
Westport is a trans-party community. It doesnt matter what party — we go by personality and perceived effectiveness. We go for the candidate appearing to be above it all. We are slightly elitist with a twist of earth. Charisma is what we like.
