WESTPORT — A COVID-19 booster shot clinic for “immunocompromised” people is planned Sept. 10 by the Westport-Weston Health District.
The clinic is for people who have received two shots of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and qualify for a third dose because of health issues related to their body’s immune system.
It will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the Westport Center for Senior Activities, 21 Imperial Ave.
Attendees must bring vaccination cards to show proof of two earlier inoculations. Anyone who misplaced their vaccination card can access their immunization record via the CT WiZ Public Portal, a program of the state Department of Public Health.
A third dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is being offered in light of recent federal Centers for Disease Control guidance that immunocompromised people may not build the recommended level of immunity with two inoculations.
Appointments can be booked through the Vaccine Administration Management System. Click here to sign up.
Booster dose clinics for the general public are expected to be scheduled when approval is given by the federal Food and Drug Administration, which officials say is likely later this month.
Eligibility for immunocompromised inoculations includes:
- A person receiving cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood.
- An organ transplant recipient taking medicine to suppress the immune system.
- A stem-cell transplant recipient within the last two years or taking medicine to suppress the immune system.
- A person with moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency, such as DiGeorge syndrome or WiskottAldrich syndrome.
- A person with advanced or untreated HIV infection.
- Someone under treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress the body’s immune response.
WWHD officials urge people to speak with their healthcare provider to determine whether an additional vaccine dose is appropriate.
