A food-collection drive to benefit local programs aiding the homeless and the hungry, sponsored by the Westport Police Department and Super Stop & Shop, will take place Saturday, July 31, at the supermarket, 1790 Post Road East.
The food drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will benefit Homes with Hope, the Gillespie Homeless Shelter and the Gillespie Center’s food pantry.
Police officers and volunteers will be on hand to collect non-perishable foods, as well as monetary donations, during the course of the drive.
Homes for Home, based in Westport, over its 37-year history has worked to help end homelessness in the region by providing independent living opportunities.
The Gillespie Center, also based in Westport, is a shelter for homeless men and women, which is often at 100 percent capacity. Its food pantry is a source of meals not for only center residents, but other Westporters in need of food assistance.
