WESTPORT — Two new officers were sworn in Monday as members of the Westport Police Department.

Devonte Savage and Handel Sam became the latest additions to the town’s police forece during a ceremony at department headquarters presided over by First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker and Chief Foti Koskinas.

Savage, 30, of Bristol, is a state-certified police officer who has worked for both the Meriden and Hartford police departments. He most recent assignment was as a school resource officer in Meriden.

He is a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, and also studied at Naugatuck Valley Community College.

Sam, 30, is a Bridgeport resident who initially will attend the Milford Police Academy for approximately six months of training before he graduates and returns to Westport for four months of field training. 

He previously has worked as a personal trainer at several area fitness centers. He is a a graduate of Central High School in Bridgeport, and has studied at Housatonic and Norwalk Community colleges.

Koskinas, in remarks at the swearing-in ceremony, thanked both men “for taking a chance on the Westport Police Department,” acknowledging they had “several employment opportunities and chose Westport.”
