WESTPORT — With a presidential election set Nov. 5, and what looks to be a tumultuous campaign season, public interest in politics is high — no more so than at Staples High School, where more than 100 students eligible to cast ballots this fall were registered as new voters this week by the League of Women Voters of Westport.

The LWV, which conducts voter-enrollment sessions at the high school annually, reports that 112 students were registered as voters and as many as 20 more took home registration forms to fill out later.

That’s the largest number of Staples seniors to sign up as new voters at one of the LWV enrollment sessions, the group reports. This year’s number is nearly twice as many as the 57 students who registered a year ago, according to the LWV.

To be eligible to cast a ballot, a person first must be registered to vote and 18 years old by the date of the election.
