WESTPORT — The Cavalry Road bridge, spanning the Saugatuck River at the Westport-Weston border, has reopened to traffic after a months-long replacement project.

The $2.5 million project called for replacing the former two-span structure with a single longer span.

Work was delayed late last year when the contractor encountered problems “associated with installing the proposed bridge deep foundations,” town officials said in an announcement at the time.

The federal government is covering up to 80 percent of the $2.5 million cost, with Westport paying roughly three-quarters of the remaining local expenses.

Town Engineer Keith Wilberg, in a statement Friday announcing completion of the project, said, “Some minor planting and clean up remains, but essential activities are complete, and the structure is ready to open to the public.”

Questions about the project should be directed to Wilberg at 203-341-1128.
