New minivans are replacing buses in the Wheels2U Westport fleet.

WESTPORT — New vehicles and upgraded ride-booking technology are being introduced for the Wheels2U Westport on-demand railroad shuttle service.

The new vehicles are Chrysler Pacifica minivans, which are more comfortable and energy-efficient than the current bus fleet, according to the Westport Transit District’s announcement. Many of the minivans also are wheelchair accessible.

Weekday hours of operation are being extended in the mornings from 5:45 to 10:30 a.m. (versus the previous 10 a.m.), transit district officials said. Evening hours remain 4 to 9:30 p.m.

Riders using the Wheels2U app will now be able  to book $2 fares to and from their homes and the town’s railroad stations starting at 5:30 a.m. for a pickup as early as 5:45 a.m. for morning service, and as early as 3:45 p.m. for a 4 o’clock ride afternoons. Riders can request a ride as late as 10:30 a.m. or 9:30 p.m.

The agency, according to the announcement, expanded its partnership with Via, a mobility systems provider, by using its booking and routing software to improve efficiency and flexibility.
