WESTPORT — Dog days return to Compo Beach as of Oct. 1, but humans accompanying Fido and Fifi and Rex and Rover to the waterfront are advised to conform to the town’s rules of canine conduct to avoid winding up in the official doghouse.

Dogs are permitted on the beach from Oct. 1 through next March 31.

However, the following rules apply:

  • Dogs are prohibited from the Compo Pavilion, playground and walkways.
  • Dogs must be leashed in all areas of the park, except in the designated off-leash area south of the pavilion, including South Beach.  Off-leash regulations are posted at the entrance to that area.
  • The person accompanying the animal is required by law to pick up its feces.

A fine of $77 will be imposed for any violation of the rules, according to parks officials.

Meanwhile, officials remind pet owners that animals continue to be prohibited from all town athletic fields and playgrounds, per the year-round ban.

“With the fall sports programs underway, we want to remind everyone that for the safety and well-being of the public and athletes, and to help keep ballfields in good playing condition, animals are not allowed on playing fields at any time of year,” Jennifer Fava, the town’s parks and recreation director, said in a statement.

“Animals are also prohibited from any town playground,” Fava added. “While animals are allowed in the surrounding areas, it is recommended that they remain on leash while on the perimeter of these town facilities.”
