WESTPORT — This is a test. Repeat, this is only a test.

Phones across Westport — and the rest of the nation — will be triggered at 2:20 p.m. this afternoon (Wednesday, Aug. 11) with emergency alerts sent as part of a test coordinated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission.

These messages are designed to test the nation’s Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts to effectively communicate details of major emergencies, according to a release from the Westport Fire Department.

The messages will clearly state the alert is only a test, local fire officials said.
