WESTPORT — The Democratic Town Committee will meet Thursday to endorse a candidate to fill an empty Planning and Zoning Commission seat.

Former Chairwoman Danielle Dobin’s election to the Board of Finance on Nov. 7 left a vacancy on the seven-member commission. Two years remain in the Democrat’s term. The vacancy must be filled by someone with the same party affiliation.

The DTC can recommend a candidate, but the town charter gives the authority to fill the slot to the remaining commission members, who will likely vote at an upcoming meeting. The P&Z meets next at 7 p.m. Dec. 4.

The commission also is without a chairperson. Members will have to chose a new leader as well at some point.

The DTC earlier this month solicited candidates to fill the empty P&Z seat. Applicants are being interviewed by its nominating committee.

Party Chairwoman Michelle Mechanic said Sunday she was thrilled there was no shortage of people coming forward.

“To me the excellent thing is 14 people actually want the seat,” Mechanic said. “To have 14 interested people is a really good sign for the DTC.”

She noted that some boards and commission have trouble filling empty slots.

The DTC’s meeting, which is open to the public, will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday on Zoom (passcode 042525).
