WESTPORT — With temperatures frozen below freezing levels through the weekend — and wind-chill values in the single digits — the state’s “Severe Cold Weather Protocol” has been activated and and local warming shelters have been designated for people who need to shelter from the frigid conditions.
The National Weather Services warns extremely cold temperatures will grip southwestern Connecticut until Sunday, with the Fahrenheit reaching daytime highs of only about 30 degrees and plunging to the mid- to low-teens overnight.
Gov. Ned Lamont, in activating the state’s weather emergency operations through noon Monday, said the response aims “to ensure that the most vulnerable populations receive protection from the severe cold conditions, which could be life-threatening if exposed to the elements for extended periods of time.”
Anyone who needs to find shelter from the weather should call “2-1-1” to connect with state and local agencies that can help, Lamont said. Transportation also can be arranged if needed, he said.
In Westport, Deputy Fire Chief Nick Marsan, the town’s emergency services director, said that residents who need assistance with cold-weather hardships should contact the town’s Department of Human Services at 203-341-1050. The agency’s office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m,
Marsan also released a list of local warming centers open to the public:
