WESTPORT — A very wet, very windy Wednesday is forecast, with the potential for flooding and power outages, according to early-morning alerts.

Skies may unleash up to 3 inches of widespread rainfall across Westport and the region — with “localized” downpours of 4 to 5 inches possible — according to the National Weather Service, threatening both coastal and general flooding.

Unsettled conditions also could trigger thunderstorms.

Winds, with the potential to gust up to 50 mph, are expected to buffet the area from noontime until 10 p.m., according to the weather service.

With the forecast of high winds and heavy rain, officials for Eversource say they are closely monitoring the weather, bringing in additional line workers to assist with power restoration.

“The high winds expected with this storm have the potential to bring down trees and limbs onto electric lines and equipment causing outages, and we’re planning accordingly,” Steve Sullivan, the Eversource Connecticut president, said in a statement.

Despite the intense inclement conditions in Wednesday’s forecast, temperatures are expected to rise to a balmy daytime high in the mid-60s.

After the day-long onslaught, the storm is expected to clear from the region overnight, leaving sunny skies Thursday, the NWS says. But temperatures will reach a high of only about 40 degrees.

The outlook for Friday and Saturday is similar — generally sunny conditions with high daytime temperatures in the upper-30s.
