WESTPORT — A nearly week-long siege of bone-chilling temperatures, plus a snowy Sunday, have prompted state and local officials to take emergency precautions for the third time this winter.

The state’s “Severe Cold Weather Protocol” has been activated by Gov. Ned Lamont from 6 p.m. Sunday through noon next Friday in anticipation of a “period of brutally frigid conditions.”
The cold front moving across the region, according to the National Weather Service, is expected to freeze daytime high temperatures in the 20- to 25-degree range, with overnight readings plunging into the single digits.
Snow is expected to begin falling, mixed with rain, late Sunday morning and changing to all snow later in the day, with accumulation predicted to be as much as 4 inches, according to the weather service.
People who need assistance or emergency accommodations should call “2-1-1” or check Connecticut’s 211 website that provides a list of resources, such as transportation to a shelter or warming center.
In Westport, people who need assistance also can contact the town’s Department of Human Services at 203-341-1050 during regular office hours, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
