WESTPORT — Students helping students.

That’s the idea behind the Westport Library “near-peer” tutoring program, in which Staples High School students are available to help local middle and elementary school students with academic subjects.

The program is available on a drop-in basis at the library, 20 Jesup Road, from 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays through Dec. 21. It will resume in January after mid-term exams.

The tutors are available to work with younger students in a range of basic subject areas, including English, math, science and social studies, as well as specialized areas like music, programming and Mandarin. The tutors have either previously participated in the program or have a letter of recommendation from a teacher, according to information provided by the library.

Students younger than 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult who remains in the Children’s Library while their child is being tutored.
