WESTPORT — Staples High School students won honors at two recent academic conferences in business and international relations.
Connecticut Future Business Leaders of America Conference
Nine teams from Staples were cited at this year’s Connecticut Future Business Leaders of America State Leadership Conference, which took place March 18 at Southern Connecticut State University. The event tested students’ knowledge in business, communication skills and leadership abilities, according to a statement from the school district.
“Competing in FBLA allows students to show their interest and abilities in subjects that we do not teach at Staples,” Sarah White, a Staples math teacher and FBLA advisor, said in the statement. “Students take the initiative to study an area that interests them and see how they compare to others throughout the state.”
Staples winners at the event include: Ollie Vynerib, first place for advertising; Ethen Perry, Aidan Stubbs and Jackson Tracey, first place for international business; Jack Jacob, second place for securities and investments; Max Benke and Jonah Bomback, second place for sports and entertainment management.
Also, Jay Nicholds, Luke Spera and R.J. Wilks, third place for sales presentation; Jack Leonard, third place for supply chain management; Chris Taylor, fourth place for supply chain management; Matthew Tybur, fourth place for organizational leadership; Mikael Nagy, fifth place for introduction to financial math.
National High School Model United Nations Conference
Four Staples students received awards of merit at the model UN event, which “provided students with an immersive, hands-on debate experience working alongside an international student community,” according to a school district statement.
“Our students were very motivated and focused with their committees. This was an unforgettable experience for our students, with all grades represented in diverse contemporary groups addressing important global issues,” Horacio Ballesteros, a Staples Spanish teacher, said in the statement.
Staples awardees include: Jacob Calandro and Julien McMahon, Special Political and Decolonization Committee, and Alessandra Spadea and Jori Altman, for Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee.
