WESTPORT — Registration is underway for students enrolling in Westport public schools’ kindergarten classes for the 2024-25 academic year.

Under a new state law, children must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 of the new school year to be eligible to enroll in kindergarten.

Because of challenges that Westport school officials say this recent change in kindergarten eligibility may pose for families, a “transitional” policy has been adopted for the coming year:

  • Any child who is not 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2024, but turns 5 before Jan. 1, 2025, may be admitted to kindergarten based on a written request by the child’s parent or guardian to the principal of the school the child will attend.

Detailed information about kindergarten signups and the registration form for 2024-25 students can be found here on the district’s website.

Parents and guardians unsure of which Westport school their child will attend kindergarten should check the district’s online school locator.

An information session is planned at 10 a.m. Friday, March 1, for parents/guardians who have registered their children at their respective schools. Teachers and school staffers will discuss the kindergarten program and answer questions.

In May, orientation sessions will take place at each of the town’s elementary school for parents/guardians and their children. Invitations to the sessions will be sent to all families who have registered their children.
