Safiya Key

WESTPORT — An educator in Greenwich public schools has been named the new principal of Coleytown Elementary School.

Safiya Key, currently the assistant principal at the International School at Dundee, was named to the post at a special Board of Education meeting Thursday. The International School at Dundee is a Greenwich magnet school with a curriculum based on the international baccalaureate primary years program.

Key replaces Janna Sirowich, who was named the principal of Coleytown Middle School in July.

“Safiya brings a strong record of experienced leadership,” Supt. of Schools Thomas Scarice said in a statement.

“I have complete confidence that Safiya is the perfect leader to build on the years of success students and families have experienced at Coleytown Elementary School,” he added.

Before her assignment at the Greenwich magnet school, Key was an assistant principal at Riverside School, and previously was a speech and language pathologist in both the Greenwich and Norwalk school districts.

Key was public affairs coordinator with the Nickelodeon cable network before pursuing a career in education.

She holds a bachelor of science degree in speech communication from Syracuse University and a master of science degree in communication disorders from Southern Connecticut State University. She also took leadership courses at the University of Bridgeport.
