WESTPORT — “Descendants,” a musical fairytale featuring “children of the worst villains in Disney history,” will be performed by the Staples Players this weekend and next.
The Players’ production, based on a Disney Channel movie, premieres at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Staples High School, 70 North Ave..
Subsequent performances are: 7:30 p.m. April 2, 8 and 9, and 3 p.m. April 2, 3 and 9.
Tickets cost $20 and may be purchased online or in the high school lobby 30 minutes prior to performances, subject to availability.
The show is primarily based on the first “Descendants” movie from Disney, and features songs such as “Evil Like Me,” “Good is the New Bad,” “Rotten to the Core,” “Be Our Guest” and others.
Familiar Disney characters also appear, including Maleficent, Belle, Cruella De Vil, Snow White and Fairy Godmother.
“I think the audience will love seeing classic Disney characters in a new light — it’s clever and inventive,” Kerry Long, the production’s co-director, said in a publicity release for the show.
“We were looking for a show that had a lot of roles, in order to feature our upperclassmen who have had their high school experience disrupted by the pandemic,” co-director David Roth said in the publicity release.
“The students have been challenged to do some very athletic dancing and sing these great pop musical theater numbers at the same time — quite a workout,” he added.
