Anita Hill, author and women’s rights scholar — whose famous testimony in the 1991 confirmation hearing of then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas rocked the nation — will be the keynote speaker next month at an event with a special connection to Westport.
Fairfield County’s Community Foundation’s Fund for Women & Girls will hold its annual luncheon — “Dream. Believe. Achieve.” — on Friday, April 22, at the Greenwich Hyatt.
“As we approach the hearings for a woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court, her perspective and experience will be fascinating,” said Ann Sheffer, a longtime Westport resident, who joined the FCCF board in 1998, the year the fund was established.
“Many Westport women have been involved with the WGF as board members and donors,” she said, “and the fund, which began with a $30,000 gift from a local woman, now has assets of $19.8 million, which makes it the largest women’s fund in New England.”
“A significant part of these funds were raised at the annual luncheons, with 800 women networking and speakers ranging from Gloria Steinem and Billie Jean King, to Tracy Ellis Ross and the late Maya Angelou.”
Started in 1992, the FCCF works with a wide range of nonprofits, as well as guiding individuals and groups with charitable funds involved in philanthropic efforts and initiatives.
