WESTPORT — The Westport Book Shop will mark its first anniversary with a slate of special activities, discounts and prizes this week.
The celebration gets underway Tuesday, Jan. 25, at the downtown shop, a nonprofit with the dual mission to support the Westport Library, while providing employment for adults with disabilities.
The store at 23 Jesup Road in its first year sold 18,950 books; provided more than over 1,400 hours of paid employment and job training to people with various abilities, and was helped by more than 50 volunteers, including 15 teenagers, who logged more than 1,780 hours, according to the anniversary announcement.
The shop offers “previously read and greatly appreciated” books, according to the announcement, as well as hard-to-find, out-of-print and antiquarian books, vintage vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and audio books.
Anniversary activities include:
- Children’s scavenger hunt: Youngsters can win a free book by hunting for facts about the shop throughout the week, beginning Tuesday.
- Cookies: The first 100 visitors on Friday, Jan. 28, will receive an anniversary cookie, baked for the occasion by Sweet P Bakery.
- Discounts and prizes: Each visitor to the store from Friday through Sunday, Jan. 28-30, is eligible for a door prize or a discount with purchase.
- Anniversary notes: Visitors to the book shop are invited to post an anniversary note on the giant anniversary greeting card inside the store. Notes also will be posted on the shop’s Instagram or Facebook pages.

The Westport Book Shop, 23 Jesup Road, is located across Jesup Green from the Westport Library. The shop is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. (The store is closed Mondays.)
